Hello, Cancernotes Amigos! Thank you for your encouragement and especially your prayers! Lots of things to give thanks for.
- The lung surgery on August 26th was very successful. The surgeon was able to get all of the tumor out while removing only a small section of my lung. This was good news!
- The tumor had “clean margins” and had not grown into any of the surrounding tissue – also good news!
- The pathology report revealed that the tumor was NOT connected to my colon cancer. This means that I am stage I lung cancer and stage III colon cancer, which is a WAY better diagnosis than stage IV colon cancer. This is REALLY good news (it essentially flips the 5-year survival rates from 1:10 (stage IV) to 9:10 (stage III). VERY thankful for this good news!
- I was released from the hospital on Friday, 8/28, and surgery recovery has been going well. I won’t be doing any sparring anytime soon, as my left side is still sore (I wouldn’t be doing any sparring, anyway), but I was able to return to work last week and start back with exercising.
- In other very big news, my grandson, Graham Joshua Paulus, was born healthy and beautiful on Wednesday, September 2nd! Graham and mom are both doing very well. We are rejoicing!
- In still other news, classes at Casa del Lago got off to a great start with a record number of students (260+). So thankful to my great team at Casa who handled everything so well while I was out for surgery!
Upcoming things to be praying for:
- I will go in for round 10 of chemotherapy this Wednesday, 9/16. Please pray for strength, stamina, and grace to rest well as I recover. This is the first of my last three treatments, so the end is in sight, praise God!
- Pray for other friends battling cancer: BA, TC, ML, and AG.

- La cirugía de pulmón del 26 de agosto fue muy exitosa. El cirujano pudo sacar todo el tumor removiendo solo una pequeña sección de mi pulmón. ¡Buenas noticias!
- El tumor tenía “márgenes limpios” y no había crecido en el tejido alrededor — ¡también buenas noticias!
- El informe de patología reveló que el tumor NO estaba conectado con mi cáncer de colon. Esto significa que soy etapa I de cáncer de pulmón y etapa III de cáncer de colon, lo cual es una MUCHÍSIMO mejor noticia que etapa IV de cáncer de colon. Esto es MUY buena noticia (básicamente cambia las tasas de supervivencia a 5 años de 1:10 — etapa IV — a 9:10 — etapa III). ¡Muy agradecido por esta buena noticia!
- Me dieron de alta del hospital el viernes 28 de agosto, y la recuperación de la cirugía ha ido bien. No estaré haciendo ningún tipo de boxeo pronto, porque mi lado izquierdo sigue adolorido (aunque no estaría haciendo boxeo de todas formas), pero pude regresar al trabajo la semana pasada y comenzar a hacer ejercicio nuevamente.
- En otras noticias muy grandes, ¡mi nieto, Graham Joshua Paulus, nació sano y hermoso el miércoles 2 de septiembre! Graham y su mamá están muy bien. ¡Estamos celebrando!

He tried to leave a comment but was having issues with his Word Press password but wanted you to know of his joy as well. End of Summer Update

Chemo, Cuba, Casa Kids and Surgery

Hello, Friends! I apologize that it has been so long since I have written. It has been a full summer, and the subtitle above pretty much sums it up.

I made it through rounds 7, 8 and 9 of chemo. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouragement, as I could truly feel them! The first five days of each 14-day cycle brought lots of nausea, fatigue, and burning/tingling in my hands, feet and tongue. It has not been fun, but praise God I am now 75% of the way through my chemo treatments.

What was a whole lot of fun and inspiration was a trip that I took to Cuba in July. I went with a team from Northwest Bible Church. I was part of a group that led two retreats for Cuban pastors and their wives while the other part of our team was doing street evangelism and supporting church plants throughout Havana. The Cuban people are going through a season of tremendous suffering (blackouts, water shortages, astronomically high gas prices, ex-migration, etc.), but what really stood out is the way Jesus is using His church to proclaim the living hope that is only found in Him. Through feeding programs, medicine distribution, drug treatment, summer schools, sports programs and preaching and teaching, the church is making Christ known. It was tremendously inspiring to see, and I came away deeply encouraged by the commitment and courage of my Cuban brothers and sisters.

Another highlight was Casa del Lago’s Summer Reading Camp. The team at Casa did a great job organizing a two-site camp that served 164 children (ages 3-12) and 35 high school interns. The program included reading enrichment (89% of kids who completed camp maintained or advanced in their reading level!), Bible, swim lessons, lunch, crafts, and recreation. Most exciting to me was the growth that happened in our high school interns, who started off timid and unsure but who, by the end of camp, were leading joyfully and confidently.

And yes…surgery. About the time many of you are reading this on Wednesday, August 26th, I will be undergoing surgery to remove a tumor in my left lung. It’s not clear if this tumor is colon cancer that has spread to my lung, or if it is an entirely separate cancer; we will know that shortly. The good news is that there is just one, relatively small tumor, which is operable. I expect to be in the hospital three days and spend the following two weeks recovering. In mid-September I will start rounds 10, 11 and 12 of chemo. My prayer and sincere hope is that I will then be done with cancer – FOREVER!!

Praises and thanksgivings:
- For the many, many of you who have been praying for and encouraging me. The peace and joy that I am experiencing in the midst of these challenges is the direct result of so many of you praying. Thank you!
- For the fantastic, hardworking team that I get to serve with at Casa del Lago, and the great work that they did this summer!
- For many new friends in Cuba and their commitment to knowing and serving Jesus – so encouraging!

Terminé las rondas 7, 8 y 9 de quimioterapia. ¡Muchas gracias por sus oraciones y su ánimo; de verdad los sentí! Los primeros cinco días de cada ciclo de 14 días trajeron mucha náusea, fatiga y ardor/hormigueo en mis manos, pies y lengua. No ha sido divertido, pero gracias a Dios ya estoy al 75% del camino en mis tratamientos de quimio.

Lo que sí fue muy divertido e inspirador fue un viaje que hice a Cuba en julio. Fui con un equipo de Northwest Bible Church. Yo formé parte de un grupo que dirigió dos retiros para pastores cubanos y sus esposas, mientras que la otra parte del equipo hacía evangelismo en las calles y apoyaba plantaciones de iglesias en toda La Habana. El pueblo cubano está pasando por una temporada de sufrimiento tremendo (apagones, escasez de agua, precios de gasolina astronómicos, emigración, etc.), pero lo que realmente destacó fue cómo Jesús está usando a Su iglesia para proclamar la esperanza viva que solo se encuentra en Él. A través de programas de alimentación, distribución de medicinas, tratamiento de adicciones, escuelas de verano, programas deportivos y la predicación y enseñanza, la iglesia está dando a conocer a Cristo. Fue profundamente inspirador verlo, y salí muy animado por el compromiso y el valor de mis hermanos y hermanas cubanos.

Otro punto destacado fue el Campamento de Lectura de Verano de Casa del Lago. El equipo de Casa hizo un gran trabajo organizando un campamento en dos sedes que sirvió a 164 niños (de 3 a 12 años) y 35 internos de preparatoria. El programa incluyó enriquecimiento de lectura (¡el 89% de los niños que completaron el campamento mantuvieron o avanzaron en su nivel de lectura!), Biblia, clases de natación, almuerzo, manualidades y recreación. Lo que más me emocionó fue el crecimiento que vimos en nuestros internos de preparatoria, quienes comenzaron tímidos e inseguros, pero que al final del campamento estaban liderando con alegría y confianza.

Medical Update #5

Hello, friends! Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.

I have now completed six of the twelve rounds in this ~~heavyweight fight~~ chemotherapy program. I will be going in this Wednesday, July 1, for the seventh round of treatment. Your prayers, a slightly reduced chemo dose (apparently the chemo drug Oxaliplatin was starting to affect my liver, so they reduced the dose), and some new anti-nausea drugs (Zyprexa and Protonix) have helped make rounds five and six a little bit better than round 4. Acupuncture has been very helpful in reducing the neuropathy in my hands and feet.

My doctor took my case to his “tumor board” (a group of doctors who discuss cases) and there is agreement that surgery is the best way to deal with the one tumor that is in my left lung. I will be meeting with a thoracic surgeon on July 10th to discuss options for the surgery, which will probably take place sometime in August. I will keep you posted!

Last week I did something I have been wanting to do for a while: I took a picture of all of the pills, capsules, powders, creams, salves, lozenges, ointments, etc. that I have taken so far on this cancer journey. It came to 28; I have since found two more that didn’t make it into the picture. This doesn’t include the steroids and actual chemo drugs that they give me at the infusion center (which is at least another 3). The picture below is intentionally blurred because, well, you don’t talk about some of these things in polite company.

To be clear, I only take a few of these drugs most weeks, but I share this picture because it visually answers the question, “Why does my life sometimes feel so complicated?” Because it is! I used to laugh at those pill boxes with all the little compartments for organizing your pills by day, time of day, week, etc. I don’t laugh at those anymore; I’m seriously thinking about buying one.

Among the items pictured: Preggie Drops. I had shared with a co-worker that I was taking Zofran for nausea. The next day she handed me a box of Preggie Drops and said, “You should try these; I used to take them for nausea while I was pregnant.” Now I am pretty sure that taking Preggie Drops is a serious violation of the Texas Man Code that results in the immediate and permanent suspension of your Man Card and a one-way plane ticket to Massachusetts…. But you know what? They’re pretty good! Please don’t tell!

- For the book of Isaiah and the promise that no matter how bad things get, God’s steadfast love and good purposes never depart from His people (Isaiah 54:10).
- For N, JM, G and T – the men in my Wednesday night ZOOM Bible study who continually encourage and pray for me!

Ya he completado seis de las doce rondas en este ~~pelea de boxeo~~ programa de quimioterapia. Este miércoles, 1 de julio, entraré para la séptima ronda de tratamiento. Sus oraciones, una dosis de quimioterapia ligeramente reducida (aparentemente el medicamento Oxaliplatino estaba empezando a afectar mi hígado, así que bajaron la dosis), y algunos nuevos medicamentos contra las náuseas (Zyprexa y Protonix) han ayudado a que las rondas cinco y seis fueran un poco mejores que la ronda cuatro. Biopsy Results

Hello Friends,

Thank you for your prayers – I continue to feel them. I did get biopsy results today. They are not the results that we were praying for; the nodule on my lung is cancer. The lab is going to run a few more tests, but the oncologist says that given my health history (non-smoker, healthy) this cancer is very likely the colon cancer spread to my lungs (ie, metastatic). We are proceeding on that assumption.

On the positive side, the tumor has not grown and there continues to be just 1 small nodule (1.6 cm) in my left lung (that’s not what metastatic cancer in the lungs usually looks like). This would indicate that surgery is a good treatment option. The oncologist will be discussing this option with pulmonologists and the surgery, if it happens, would likely be late July/early August. For now, I continue on my regular chemo regiment (I am getting treatment #5 today-Friday), with regular scans to monitor the spot on my lung and make sure more don’t appear. Thanks for praying! Philippians 1:19-20!

El laboratorio va a hacer algunas pruebas adicionales, pero el oncólogo dice que, dada mi historia médica (no fumador, saludable), es muy probable que este cáncer sea el cáncer de colon que se ha extendido a mis pulmones (es decir, metastásico).   Am sober to read that the lung node is cancer but know individuals who have entire lower lobes removed and are doing well! Courage to you Josh! And endurance with the challenging side effects of Chemo. As a college rower u know a lot about perseverance! May that background see u thru this challenge

Medical Update #4

Thank you for reading, and for the many, many, many of you who have prayed and reached out with encouraging words!

Last week I had my fourth round of chemo. Dr. K agreed to switch the schedule to a Wednesday-Friday infusion, which gives me two pretty good days at work and puts my worst days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when it is easier for me to rest.

The nausea and fatigue were significantly more intense this time and lasted longer (days 2-6). While I am getting better at managing the symptoms, and acupuncture seems to be helping significantly with the neuropathy in my hands and feet, there’s nothing that really takes the edge off of the nausea. I am learning to take it one day, or a few hours, at a time; thinking about 8 more treatments lasting to the end of September is more than I want to think about.

Today I will get a bronchoscopy. What’s a bronchoscopy? Well, from what I can tell, take everything you know about a colonoscopy (the full anesthesia, the scope, the biopsy knife – but minus the bowel prep. YAY!) and run it down the other end (ie, down your throat). Note to self: If you find a place offering to do both, or any 2-for-1 specials, you should definitely skip those!

Why am I getting a bronchoscopy? Because there’s a small, 1.6 cm nodule on my left lung that 3 CTs, an MRI, and a PET scan have not been able to conclusively diagnose. My blood work gives encouraging indications that this is not cancer, but my doctors want to be sure. Currently, my official diagnosis is stage 3 colon cancer. If this spot on my lung turns out to be colon cancer, that would move me to stage 4, which becomes a much tougher fight. So, we’re praying that it turns out to be a benign cyst…an infection of some kind…a marble that I swallowed when I was 3…a peanut M&M… anything but colon cancer.

Gracias por leer, y por los muchísimos—muchísimos—muchísimos de ustedes que han orado y me han enviado palabras de ánimo.

La semana pasada tuve mi cuarta ronda de quimioterapia. El Dr. K aceptó cambiar el horario a una infusión de miércoles a viernes, lo cual me da dos días bastante buenos en el trabajo y pone mis peores días en viernes, sábado y domingo, cuando me es más fácil descansar.

Las náuseas y la fatiga fueron significativamente más intensas esta vez y duraron más (días 2–6). Aunque estoy mejorando en cómo manejar los síntomas, y la acupuntura parece estar ayudando bastante con la neuropatía en mis manos y pies, no hay nada que realmente quite el filo de las náuseas. Estoy aprendiendo a tomarlo un día, o unas horas, a la vez; pensar en 8 tratamientos más, que durarán hasta finales de septiembre, es más de lo que quiero considerar ahora mismo.

Hoy me harán una broncoscopía. ¿Qué es una broncoscopía? Bueno, por lo que puedo decir, toma todo lo que sabes de una colonoscopía (la anestesia completa, el tubo, el cuchillo para biopsias… pero sin la preparación intestinal. ¡YAY!) y pásalo por el otro extremo (o sea, por la garganta). Nota mental: si encuentras un lugar que ofrezca hacer ambas, o algún especial de “2 por 1”, definitivamente deberías evitarlos.

¿Por qué me van a hacer una broncoscopía? Porque hay un pequeño nódulo de 1.6 cm en mi pulmón izquierdo que 3 tomografías, una resonancia y un PET scan no han podido diagnosticar de manera concluyente. Mis análisis de sangre dan indicios alentadores de que no es cáncer, pero mis médicos quieren estar seguros. Actualmente, mi diagnóstico oficial es cáncer de colon en etapa 3. Si este punto en mi pulmón resultara ser cáncer de colon, eso me movería a etapa 4, lo cual se convierte en una lucha mucho más difícil. Así que estamos orando para que resulte ser un quiste benigno… una infección de algún tipo… una canica que me tragué cuando tenía 3 años… un cacahuate cubierto de chocolate… cualquier cosa menos cáncer de colon.

Motivos de gratitud y alabanzas…
- La promesa de Cristo: “Mi gracia es suficiente para ti, porque mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad.” 2 Corintios 12:9
- Una temporada realmente divertida de graduaciones y celebraciones de fin de año con nuestros estudiantes en Casa del Lago.
- Una visita muy alegre el fin de semana pasado de mi hija que vive en Austin.
- Una reunión del Día de los Caídos con amigos de la iglesia.
- La Dra. M, la acupunturista cuyas terapias están ayudando con mi neuropatía.
- Huevos revueltos con tocino — excepto en los días verdaderamente peores, siempre puedo animarme para comer huevos revueltos con tocino.
Cosas por las cuales orar…
- Por una biopsia sin complicaciones hoy, por un resultado de “no es cáncer”, y por una paz y un gozo continuos en el Señor.
- Por fuerza y resistencia para la quinta ronda de quimioterapia la próxima semana (3–5 de junio).
- Por paz para mis hijos, mis padres y mi familia extendida mientras caminan conmigo en este proceso.
- Por BA, TC, CS, ML y otros amigos que están luchando contra el cáncer.
- Por el equipo de verano de Casa del Lago mientras se preparan para nuestro Campamento de Lectura 2026: 164 niños de primaria; 35 consejeros de secundaria; mucha lectura y celebrando las maravillosas Buenas Noticias de lo que Jesús ha hecho; ¡va a ser UNA FIESTA!

Medical Update #3: The Two C’s

May 4, 2026, start of my third treatment. 4 de mayo, el comienzo de mi terecer quimioterapia.

[WARNING: If you’re squeamish about potty humor, you should just jump down to the PRAISES / THANKSGIVINGS. You have been warned….]

Today I began my third infusion. It makes my thinking kind of cloudy, so I’ll use that as my excuse for not taking a picture at the infusion center; this one that I took in my living room tonight will have to do.

People have said, “Gosh, it must be hard thinking about cancer all the time.” The fact is, I don’t think about cancer all the time – at least, I don’t think about it nearly as much as I think about the other “c-word” that goes along with cancer treatment, and that word is “constipation”.

It’s a little secret we have in the Cancer Club: a lot of the chemo drugs, and especially the anti-nausea drugs, stop you up really bad. I was totally unaware of it till I joined the club and started talking with people who have been through it. I have consistently heard, “Oh yeah, that was the worst part!”

So, day-to-day, my top-of-mind health concern is not “How can I beat cancer?”, but “When did I last go, and what will it take for me to be able to go again?”

The literature I was given on this subject said very polite things like, “Some chemotherapy can decrease gut activity” and “Possible side effects include constipation”.

Well, after two rounds of chemo treatments, this would be my re-write, based on excruciating personal experience:

“YOU ARE GOING TO WAR!!! You will most certainly experience catastrophic levels constipation unless you take this deadly seriously. Stool softeners and laxatives? Yes, all of them! Maximum recommended dose? Double it!! Maximum number of doses in a day? Double that, too!! Prunes and apricots? Eat them by the fistful! Hot tea and coffee? Drink gallons of them, and gallons of water, too!!! A tablespoon of olive oil before bed? Ha! Just chug it straight out of the bottle three or four times a day!”

And now…to more uplifting things!

PRAISES / THANKSGIVINGS
- For the 36+ people who have brought me meals over the last 2.5 months! I am so grateful!
- For the guys I have helped coach this year at White Rock Rowing. At Central Regional Championships this weekend they won the U17 8+ and finished second in the U16 8+ and Men’s Novice 4+. So proud of these guys!
- For a sermon from Hebrews 12 at Mercy Presbyterian Church this past Sunday, reminding me of God’s greater purposes for suffering and discipline in the lives of His people.
- For my neighbor C, who drove me to my treatment this AM; for my good friend R, who ate lunch with me during the infusion; and for my dear friend D, who visited and drove me home after the treatment.
- I have a grandson who is going to be born in September! Wow! So very excited for this!
PRAYER REQUESTS
- For the Lord to sustain me with His peace and joy in the coming week.
- That the Lord would heal my body of cancer and give me grace to get through this round of treatment.
- For friends BA, TC, SQ and ML, who are all in different stages of battling cancer.
- For my Casa del Lago team, as they work really hard to plan our Summer Reading Camp. 160 kids and 34 youth counselors – it’s going to be a BLAST!

Hoy comencé mi tercera infusión. Me deja la mente un poco nublada, así que usaré eso como mi excusa por no haber tomado una foto en el centro de infusión; esta que tomé en mi sala esta noche tendrá que bastar.

La gente me ha dicho: “Caray, debe ser difícil estar pensando en el cáncer todo el tiempo”. La verdad es que no pienso en el cáncer todo el tiempo —al menos, no pienso en él ni de cerca tanto como pienso en la otra palabra con “c” que acompaña al tratamiento del cáncer, y esa palabra es “constipación”.

Es un pequeño secreto que tenemos en el Club del Cáncer: muchos de los medicamentos de quimioterapia, y especialmente los anti-náuseas, te dejan completamente atorado. Yo no tenía ni idea hasta que entré al club y empecé a hablar con personas que ya habían pasado por esto. He escuchado consistentemente: “Oh sí, ¡esa fue la peor parte!”

Así que, día a día, mi preocupación principal de salud no es “¿Cómo puedo vencer el cáncer?”, sino “¿Cuándo fue la última vez que fui, y qué necesito hacer para poder ir otra vez?”

La literatura que me dieron sobre este tema decía cosas muy educadas como: “Algunos tipos de quimioterapia pueden disminuir la actividad intestinal” y “Posibles efectos secundarios incluyen estreñimiento”.

Bueno, después de dos rondas de quimioterapia, esta sería mi versión reescrita, basada en una experiencia personal excruciante:

“¡¡¡VAS A LA GUERRA!!! Con toda seguridad experimentarás niveles catastróficos de estreñimiento a menos que tomes esto mortalmente en serio. ¿Ablandadores de heces y laxantes? ¡Sí, todos! ¿Dosis máxima recomendada? ¡Dóblala! ¿Número máximo de dosis por día? ¡Dóblalo también! ¿Ciruelas pasas y chabacanos? ¡Cómelos a puñados! ¿Té caliente y café? ¡Bebe galones, y galones de agua también! ¿Una cucharada de aceite de oliva antes de dormir? ¡Ja! ¡Mejor trágatelo directo de la botella tres o cuatro veces al día!”

Y ahora… ¡a cosas más edificantes!

Medical Update #2

Thank you, friends, for your encouragement and prayers on this journey! I am on a 14-day chemo cycle, and today is day #5 of my second cycle. Though I am still early in the process (the doctor is planning for 12 treatments, and I just finished the second one), this is the pattern that’s developing so far:
- Day 1 (Monday) – A 1 hour infusion of steroids and anti-nausea drugs, followed by a 2-hour infusion of a chemo drug called Oxaliplatin. Then they connect me to the “chemo lemon” which slowly infuses a second chemo drug called Fluorouracil IV over the next 46 hours.
- Days 2-3 (Tuesday-Wednesday) – Some mild to medium nausea and fatigue as the drugs go into my system. Also, some stinging in my fingertips and extra sensitivity to cold.
- Days 4-5 (End-of-day Wednesday- middle-of-day Friday) – A lot of fatigue and pretty strong nausea.
- Days 6-14 – I was feeling pretty good by day 6 of the first cycle and was able to get back to my normal routine. I am hoping and praying that this pattern will continue for the other cycles…..

- For a wonderful Grand Opening Celebration last Saturday at Casa del Lago’s new headquarters facility. Rain and cold did not dampen spirits as our students, donors, community partners and staff gathered to celebrate what God has done in providing this space to serve the community!
- For my parents, who came in this week for the Grand Opening and to support me in this second chemo cycle. So thankful for their help!
- For Erin, Pam & Cindy, who teach the Saturday AM yoga class at Northwest BC; it’s a great class!
Prayer requests….

The ribbon-cutting at Casa del Lago’s new headquarters.
- For continuing peace and joy as I battle cancer.
- For the ability to sleep well and to keep eating during the chemo treatments. This is more of a marathon than a sprint (I will be getting treatments through Labor Day), and fatigue and weight loss are two of the big enemies that I need to avoid.
- For peace and joy for my family as we go through this together.
- For the guys on the White Rock Rowing team, who are racing in Oakridge TN this weekend. I had to take a medical leave from coaching starting on 4/1, but they have been doing well and I am praying that they have a great weekend. Go White Rock!
- For strength for the leaders at Casa del Lago, who are picking up the slack for me on these chemo weeks.

  Greetings from TN and my very first regatta. That makes me laugh thinking of the thousands (?) you’ve been to.
  
  As I think back on your welcome speech this year, I remember you saying to Jude and his teammates, “rowing is the hardest thing you’ll ever do. It will prepare you for every single thing you face in the future.” We talk in our home often about the impact you had face to face and the impact you’re still making. Thank you for loving Jesus with your entire heart and loving our boys out of an overflow of that love. Thank you for fighting with hope for the future and an assurance of your salvation. Thank you for finding joy in your current day to day. Thank you for the honesty of hard days.

Gospel Weeping, Gospel Winking;

Being sick has me thinking about brokenness and hope. The Gospel (the Good News about God’s saving work in Jesus Christ) teaches me to weep, and it teaches me to wink.

Gospel weeping is acknowledging and experiencing the deep brokenness of this world. This world is not the way it is supposed to be. Death is a grim intruder, not part of this world as it was originally made. Cancer and sickness and the seeming endless variations of human suffering are all symptoms of a deeper problem, reminders that our rebel race is not right with God. Our hearts long for love that does not end; for beauty that never fades; for peace that is undisturbed; for glory that lasts. These longings are not the made-up fantasies of fairy tales, but the reflections in our hearts of the way that, deep down, we know the world was made to be. Death makes a mockery of all these things, but that’s only half the story….

The Bible announces the wonderful Good News that Jesus, by His life, death and resurrection, has overthrown the reign of death. Jesus’ resurrected and glorified Body is both the proof of, and the preview to, God’s glorious work of making all things new. That renewing power is even now, presently, at work in those who trust in Christ, and that gives me great hope. It means that the suffering cancer brings (and I am suffering far, far, far less than so many others) is not meaningless but part of my good Father’s redeeming plan. And it means that whatever may happen with regards to my cancer, the end of my story will be the consummation of redeeming love more glorious than anything my mind can imagine.

None of this takes away the real suffering of cancer or sorrow of death (which I hope is still several decades away), but it frames these realities with the bigger, fuller reality of the living hope that is in Jesus. “Gospel winking” is the expression of that hope. In the midst of the tears, there’s a wink, even a laugh: these sufferings have a purpose, death is not the final word, and the end is more glorious than we can imagine. I put a wink in the title of this blog about cancer to remind and encourage myself, and hopefully many of you, of these truths. ;cancernotes.blog

Lagrimas y guiños en el evangelio;

Estar enfermo me tiene pensando en la quebrantadura y en la esperanza. El Evangelio (las Buenas Nuevas acerca de la obra salvadora de Dios en Jesucristo) me da lagrimas, y también me enseña a guiñar el ojo.

Tener lagrimas según el Evangelio es reconocer y experimentar la profunda quebrantadura de este mundo. Este mundo no es como se supone que debe ser. La muerte es un intruso sombrío, no parte del mundo tal como fue creado originalmente. El “guiño en el Evangelio” expresa esa esperanza. “When life gives you lemons…”

[This post originally got published before I had finished writing it. A rookie blogger mistake 😦 Sorry! ]

Probably not the lemons the person who first spoke those words had in mind (and definitely don’t try making lemonade with this), but I think the sentiment applies.

On Wednesday afternoon my daughter Sophie went with me to the infusion center to get disconnected. It all seemed a bit complicated to me, but Sophie’s an RN and she said, “Yeah, that’s easy!” Having her be able to disconnect me will give me a lot more flexibility in scheduling the treatments.

1 “chemo lemon” down…11 to go.

Feeling pretty good so far. A little more fatigued; some tingling in my fingertips.

PRAISES/THANKSGIVINGS
- For Easter worship at Northwest BC and Mercy PC, both joyous celebrations of the Living Hope that is found in Christ
- For a lovely Easter dinner hosted by the L family – such a blessing
- For nurse M at the infusion center, who was so kind guiding me through my first infusion
- For N, T, G & JM, the men in my Wednesday Bible study who pray for and encourage me
PRAYER REQUESTS
- For continuing peace and joy in the Lord
- For healing for my body
- For the spot on my lung (which they have not been able to conclusively diagnose) to respond to the antibiotics I am on and NOT be cancer

Me siento bastante bien hasta ahora. Un poco más fatigado; algo de hormigueo en las yemas de los dedos.

Medical Update #1:

April 6, 2026
Chemo Kickoff

Started chemotherapy this morning at 10 AM. First hour was getting my blood taken and sent to the lab to be sure I was ready. Second hour was an infusion of anti-nausea medications and steroids. Hours three and four were an infusion of chemo drug Oxaliplatin.

And they sent me home with a party favor: what looks like a large lemon filled with 230 ml of a drug called Flouracil IV (see below). Over the next 48 hours I will wear this “lemon” in a waist pack and it will pump the drugs into my chemo port. I will be free to walk around, drive, and generally carry on with life while the drug goes into my system. Pretty cool lemon!

My doctor is telling me this is the first of 12 infusions: one every 2 weeks for the next 24 weeks. I have been told to expect some nausea, fatigue, and probably some numbness in my fingers and toes (neuropathy). Most patients feel the worst on days 6, 7, and 8 of their 2-week cycle, but everyone is different. And I have been told I will almost certainly keep my hair (certain follically-challenged friends on the Casa board have told me not to worry about this ;-)).

Physically, I am feeling very good. I was able to run 5 miles this weekend and do a medium-intensity body-and-resistance-band circuit this morning before going in for the infusion. Docs are encouraging me to stay as active as possible, so I am going to try.

Jesus has been ministering a sweet peace to my spirit. The prayers and encouragements of so many of you have been a massive part of that. Stage III cancer focuses the mind on “the big stuff” and celebrating my risen Savior Who has conquered sin and death and hell for me was especially powerful last week.

Please keep the prayers coming!
- For the Lord to continue ministering His peace and joy to my spirit
- For the Lord to heal my body completely
- For the Lord stave off the nausea, fatigue, neuropathy, and other chemo side effects
- For the Lord to minister His peace to my kids and family
- For the Lord to grant an extra measure of grace to my fantastic team at Casa del Lago, who are praying, encouraging me, and picking up some of the slack for me
So thankful for my son Jonathan, who insisted on being present for my chemo kickoff. Muy agradecido por mi hijo Jonathan, quien insistió en estar presente para el inicio de mi quimio.

Comencé la quimioterapia esta mañana a las 10. La primera hora fue para sacarme sangre y enviarla al laboratorio para asegurar de que mi cuerpo estaba listo. La segunda hora fue una infusión de medicamentos contra las náuseas y esteroides. Horas tres y cuatro fueron una infusión del medicamento de quimio Oxaliplatino.

Y me mandaron a casa con un recuerdo de fiesta: lo que parece un limón grande lleno con 230 ml de un medicamento llamado Fluorouracilo IV (ver arriba). Durante las próximas 48 horas llevaré este “limón” en una riñonera y bombeará el medicamento a mi puerto de quimio. Podré caminar, manejar y, en general, seguir con la vida mientras el medicamento entra en mi sistema. ¡Un limón bastante genial!

Mi doctor me dice que este es el primero de 12 ciclos: uno cada dos semanas durante las próximas 24 semanas. Me han dicho que espere algo de náusea, fatiga y probablemente algo de entumecimiento en los dedos de las manos y los pies (neuropatía). La mayoría de los pacientes se sienten peor en los días 6, 7 y 8 de su ciclo de dos semanas, pero cada persona es diferente. Y me han dicho que casi con certeza conservaré mi cabello (ciertos amigos “capilarmente desafiados” (es decir, calvos) de la mesa directiva de Casa me han dicho que no me preocupe por esto ;-)).

Físicamente, me siento muy bien. Pude correr 5 millas este fin de semana y hacer un circuito de intensidad media con bandas de resistencia esta mañana antes de ir a la infusión. Los doctores me animan a mantenerme lo más activo posible, así que lo voy a intentar.

Jesús ha estado ministrando una dulce paz a mi espíritu. Las oraciones y palabras de ánimo de tantos de ustedes han sido una parte enorme de eso. El cáncer en etapa III enfoca la mente en “las cosas grandes”, y celebrar a mi Salvador resucitado, Quien ha vencido el pecado, la muerte y el infierno por mí, fue especialmente poderoso la semana pasada.

Por favor, sigan orando.
- Que el Señor siga ministrando Su paz y Su gozo a mi espíritu
- Que el Señor sane completamente mi cuerpo
- Que el Señor aparte la náusea, la fatiga, la neuropatía y otros efectos secundarios de la quimio
- Que el Señor ministre Su paz a mis hijos y a mi familia
- Que el Señor conceda una medida extra de gracia a mi fantástico equipo en Casa del Lago, que está orando, animándome y cubriendo parte de mi carga

  What a beautiful testimony — that through it all, you experience a grace and peace that surpasses all understanding. Many years ago, in trying to reconcile my father’s death at 39, I stopped asking why things happen the way they do. I can’t begin to understand the mind of God but I can understand his love, his tender mercies and his grace.
  
  A few weeks ago, a couple of young men asked me to explain God and I replied that I could only testify to what I’ve seen in my own life, the miracles of a child liberated from addiction, the endless patience and love the Lord shows me, the undeserved blessings. We fight on knowing that this life is not real, is not our home, and that one day we will be home with the Lord.
  
  Having your children, Sophie and Jonathan, with you is such a blessing. Fathers are so important. Families fight this fight together and, I believe, grow stronger from the struggle. Your example is a light to the world.
